Cape Greco, Cyprus. One person died and five others were recovered after Cyprus activated its national Search and Rescue Plan “Nearchos” when three boats got into difficulty in rough seas off Cape Greco, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said.


Rescue operation

The plan was activated at 14:30 on Saturday in the Agioi Anargyroi maritime area near Cape Greco. Two of the three boats were completely destroyed after running aground on rocks amid severe sea turbulence, the JRCC said.

A Police Aerial Operations Unit helicopter, a National Guard 460 Search and Rescue Squadron helicopter, a Famagusta Police Directorate patrol boat, Fire and Rescue Special Unit personnel, Famagusta Fire Station crews and Ambulance Service vehicles were deployed.

People recovered

Six people were recovered in total. The first was rescued by the Famagusta police patrol boat and was reported to be in good health.

Search and rescue helicopters recovered five further people. Two were in good health and released after receiving first aid, while two were taken to Famagusta General Hospital.

A Greek Cypriot was recovered unconscious by helicopter and taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where his death was confirmed, the JRCC said.
