Paphos, Cyprus. Paphos municipality has installed 55 cameras in public spaces to address crime and vandalism of public property, Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou said.

The municipality has received pre-approval from state departments for a further 60 cameras, subject to the installation of the required infrastructure.

Meeting on vandalism measures

The measures were discussed at a meeting at Paphos Municipal Hall chaired by Onisiforou. It was attended by Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou, Polis Chrysochous Mayor Yiotis Papachristofi, Ierokipia Deputy Mayor Andreas Siikkis, and representatives of the Paphos District Local Government Organisation, the Paphos Police Directorate and other departments.

Infrastructure and footage storage

Onisiforou said the additional cameras would require poles, solar panels to allow operation without a mains power connection, and memory cards capable of storing footage for 20 to 30 days.

He said authorities across the wider area should adopt a common approach to protecting public property and responding to anti-social behaviour.

A protocol will be established for storing and reviewing footage, involving local authority and police representatives, to ensure recordings are used properly.

District-wide cooperation

Onisiforou said the aim was not for municipalities in Paphos district to become “big brother”, but to protect their property.

The mayors of Akamas and Polis Chrysochous and the deputy mayor of Ierokipia agreed to jointly promote the proposed measures. They also authorised Onisiforou to liaise with the relevant state departments on arrangements for the installation and operation of surveillance systems in their public spaces.
