Paralimni, Cyprus. The 57-year-old partner of businessman Dimi Mavropoulos remains hospitalised with fractures at Famagusta General Hospital following the fatal boat tragedy at Cape Greco. Mavropoulos, 76, died after his vessel was destroyed in extreme weather conditions.

Condition of survivors

Police said the woman’s condition is not considered a cause for concern. Mavropoulos’ 30-year-old daughter has been discharged from hospital.

Preliminary findings indicate that Mavropoulos became trapped in the wreckage of his boat, while his partner and daughter jumped into the sea and were rescued by helicopters deployed by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

Police investigation

Ayia Napa Police Station is continuing its investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy.

Police sources said statements will be taken from the owners of the other two boats involved, including the owner of the vessel that was destroyed, the five people rescued by police and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and eyewitnesses.

Investigators will examine publicly available videos and witness accounts to determine where the boats were moored and how they were swept away.

The exact cause of Mavropoulos’ death is expected to be determined by a scheduled post-mortem examination.

Other rescues and inspections

Police and members of the public rescued one person from the first boat, which was registered as a coastal tourism vessel.

Two people from the third boat were rescued by helicopters. That vessel did not sink.

Early on Sunday, Fisheries Department officials began inspections in the area to determine whether oil pollution had occurred.
