Police arrest 19 and issue 356 traffic fines in nationwide operation

Nicosia, Cyprus. Police arrested 19 people and issued 356 traffic fines during a nationwide operation on Monday night, authorities said on Tuesday. The operation included vehicle, passenger and premises checks in urban areas.

Operation results

Police said organised patrols were carried out at key locations as part of efforts to prevent serious crime, maintain public order and strengthen public safety.

The arrests concerned offences including illegal residence in the Republic, unlawful possession of drugs, resisting arrest and failure to appear before court.

Officers stopped 686 vehicles and checked 854 people travelling in them. They also inspected 44 premises, resulting in four reports relating to suspected unlawful activity.

Traffic enforcement

Traffic checks resulted in 356 fines for various offences, while 11 further suspected traffic violations remain under investigation.

Of the fines issued, 150 were for speeding. Police impounded eight vehicles.

A total of 90 alcohol tests were conducted, resulting in four reports. Officers also carried out five preliminary drug tests, one of which was positive.

Continued operations

Police said the operations would continue daily through an increased presence, targeted checks and immediate operational action aimed at preventing crime, protecting the public and maintaining order.
