Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. A municipal traffic police officer has resigned, alleging bullying, intimidation and unfair treatment by the mayor and municipal council.

Mayor Yiotis Papachristofi rejected the allegations on Tuesday, describing the situation involving the officer as problematic.

Resignation allegations

In his resignation letter, the officer made serious allegations against Papachristofi and the Polis Chrysochous municipal council.

He cited incidents of bullying and intimidation, as well as unequal and unfair treatment, and expressed dissatisfaction with the way he said he had been treated during his period of service.

Mayor’s response

Papachristofi and the municipal council said the officer had allegedly caused problems since he was first employed.

“He did not realise that he must behave appropriately, as all other employees do. Unfortunately, this particular employee wanted to do as he pleased,” Papachristofi said.

The mayor added that the officer had taken sick leave and that the municipal council had rejected his request for three years’ leave after he was admitted to college.
