Kyiv, Ukraine. Russian ballistic missiles and drones struck the Ukrainian capital early on Thursday, killing two people, including one in the parking lot of a damaged maternity hospital, officials said. Eight people were injured.

Hospital and homes damaged

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said part of the maternity hospital’s facade and a nearby clinic-diagnostic center were damaged. Police said nine homes, a post office, warehouses and dozens of cars were damaged across three districts. Several explosions were heard throughout the city.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the strikes targeted civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, the maternity hospital, energy infrastructure and logistics facilities.

Overnight barrage

Ukraine’s air force said the barrage included an unspecified number of hypersonic and ballistic missiles, 282 drones and other weapons. Zelenskiy said there were three waves of ballistic missiles and that around 60% of them were downed in Kyiv.

Russia has intensified its air campaign against Ukraine in recent months, deploying more drones that are faster and harder to intercept, while Ukraine faces a shortage of interceptors for ballistic missiles.

Zelenskiy, who was in New York for a session of the UN General Assembly, said insufficient pressure on Moscow had allowed repeated strikes. He called for a strong response from the United States and said Ukraine needed ballistic interceptors to protect lives.
