Kyiv, Ukraine. Russian drone and missile strikes killed eight people on Thursday in Kyiv and the northeastern Kharkiv region, officials said. The attacks damaged a maternity hospital in the capital and struck a farm’s vegetable storage facility.

Damage and casualties in Kyiv

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was in New York for the UN General Assembly, said two people were killed in Kyiv. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said eight others were injured and that one of those killed was in the maternity hospital’s parking lot.

Officials said part of the hospital’s facade, along with windows and doors, was damaged. No patients or medical staff were injured. Police said nine homes, a post office, warehouses and dozens of cars were also damaged.

“As people were sleeping, flashes from explosions lit up the sky,” Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram. He said the strikes again targeted Kyiv and civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, the maternity hospital, energy infrastructure and logistics.

Farm struck in Kharkiv region

A separate Russian attack on a vegetable storage facility at a farm in a Kharkiv region village killed six people and injured 12, prosecutors said.

Ukraine’s air force said the overnight barrage across the country involved 282 drones, an unspecified number of hypersonic and ballistic missiles, and other weapons.

Authorities in the northwestern Rivne region reported infrastructure damage from strikes that continued into Thursday morning but gave no further details. The Volyn region, which borders Poland, also came under attack.

Moscow has intensified its air campaign in recent months, deploying more drones that are faster and harder to stop, while Ukraine faces a shortage of interceptors for ballistic missiles.
