Nicosia, Cyprus. Severe storms that struck Cyprus around noon on Saturday caused damage in several parts of the island, bringing down trees, disrupting roads and damaging photovoltaic installations, greenhouses and beach equipment.

Municipal and district authorities said crews remained on alert as heavy rain, strong winds and lightning continued to affect affected areas.

Strovolos and Larnaca incidents

Strovolos mayor Stavros Stavrinidis reported several incidents involving fallen branches, warning that they could pose risks to residents and motorists.

He said municipal crews were on standby to address weather-related problems and urged residents to report further incidents by calling 99643044.

The Larnaca district government said municipalities in the district remained on alert as severe weather conditions persisted.

Heavy rain and strong winds caused two trees to fall, one in Drosia and another on the road linking Athienou and Lympia, according to the district government.

EOA president Angelos Hadjicharalambous said the tree in Drosia had been removed by Larnaca municipality. He added that the fire service remained on full alert in case of further incidents.

Power outages and damage

Aradippou mayor Christodoulos Partos said power outages had been reported in several areas of the town and that municipal crews were ready to respond to incidents.

Polis Chrysochous mayor Yiotis Papachristofis said strong winds damaged greenhouses and photovoltaic installations, as well as sunbeds and umbrellas on beaches in Pomos, Argaka and Ayia Marina.

Fire in Kokkinotrimithia

Fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis said lightning struck a wooden electricity pylon in a fenced area in Kokkinotrimithia, sparking a fire.

He said five staffed fire trucks were deployed to extinguish the blaze.
