First fire
The first fire started at around 4pm in the Potamoudes area, burning approximately seven hectares of land before being brought fully under control by 6pm.
The scale of the fire led to the activation of the “Icarus” protocol, with nine firefighting aircraft taking part in the response.
Second blaze
A second fire broke out at around 6pm in the Mersinia area, approximately 500 metres from the first blaze.
Firefighting crews responded immediately and brought the fire under control before it spread.
Investigation
Forestry department spokesman Glafkos Kyriakou said the two incidents pointed to a malicious act.
A total of 57 forestry department personnel and 11 fire engines were deployed, while six diggers, two tractors and a water tanker also assisted in the operation.
The causes of both fires remain under investigation.
