Nicosia, Cyprus. Pedestrian buttons at at least three busy pelican crossings in Nicosia were reported out of order on Thursday, preventing green walk signals from being activated.

The affected crossings are at the Aluminium Tower, Apoel and National Guard Street T-junctions.

Reported faults

The crossings are located at the junction of Limassol Avenue and Aglandjia Avenue near Aluminium Tower; the junction of Makarios Avenue and John F Kennedy Avenue near Apoel; and the junction of Makarios Avenue and National Guard Street.

Pedestrians told the Cyprus Mail that the buttons at all three crossings were not working. They said they were forced either to wait for sufficient gaps in traffic or to cross while vehicles may be approaching on some of the city’s busiest roads.

Previous and reporting issues

Similar problems were reported in recent weeks at the pelican crossing on Stasinos Street at Eleftheria Square. That crossing has since been repaired.

The government previously operated an online platform, FixCyprus, through which the public could report road network issues. Its online report form now returns a 404 error, preventing users from submitting fault reports.

The Cyprus Mail said it contacted Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos and the public works department for comment but had not received a response.
