Tiganokinisi raises over €770,000 for school environmental projects in Cyprus
Cyprus’ cooking oil recycling programme has supported over 1,200 school activities, with its third annual festival scheduled for October 24.

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ Tiganokinisi programme has generated over €770,000 for school environmental projects by converting more than 1,200 tonnes of discarded cooking oil into biodiesel, according to the education ministry.
Nationwide school participation
The ministry said the scheme now involves over 540 schools alongside 160 supporting organisations, among them businesses and local authorities. Revenue from biodiesel sales has financed more than 1,200 school activities addressing environmental issues and sustainability.
Tiganokinisi began in 2011 with five participating schools. According to the ministry, it has developed into a nationwide initiative that encourages environmental awareness and sustainable practices by bringing together schools, businesses and public bodies.
Festival to recognise collection efforts
The ministry will stage the third annual Tiganokinisi Festival at the Athalassa Environmental Information and Education Centre on Saturday, October 24. The event will run from 10am until 1pm and welcome families, children and school groups.
An awards ceremony will honour the schools and supporters whose collections of used cooking oil were the largest during the 2025-2026 school year.
Practical environmental activities
According to the ministry, visitors can join interactive activities covering biodiversity, energy, water conservation and how used cooking oil is managed. Games, experiments and educational activities will show practical approaches to environmental protection.
Healthy snacks will be available. Every participant will also receive a reusable wax wrap intended to help reduce plastic waste.
