Nicosia, Cyprus. The transport ministry announced on Tuesday that it has launched a tender for smart traffic lights to be installed at locations in Nicosia and Limassol, in a project estimated at €41.9 million.

The system will use above-ground detectors at 15 traffic light-controlled junctions in the two cities and is intended to adapt signalling times to real-time traffic conditions.

Tender and timetable

The tender is titled “Supply, Installation and Operation of Vehicle-Actuated Signal (VA) Systems at Signal-Controlled Junctions in Nicosia and Limassol”.

The deadline for submitting tenders is September 18. Work is scheduled to begin in early October, with a projected delivery timetable of three months.

Adaptive traffic control

According to the ministry, the project aims to optimise traffic light operations through real-time vehicle detection and the dynamic adjustment of signalling times.

The ministry said the system is expected to help ease traffic congestion and reduce total travel time at the controlled junctions and on the related roads.

An actuated signal uses sensors, cameras or push buttons to detect vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians. Rather than operating on a fixed timer, it changes or extends green-light periods according to real-time traffic demand.

The system is intended to implement adaptive traffic light control. The above-ground detectors will be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty of at least 24 months.
