Limassol, Cyprus. The trial of three men charged with the murder of businessman Stavros Demosthenous began on Monday before the Limassol permanent criminal court. The defendants also face charges of illegal possession, transport and use of a firearm.

The shooting

Demosthenous, a former chairman of Karmiotissa FC, was shot dead on October 17, 2025, in Ayios Athanasios. He was travelling in his Rolls Royce at the time, and his 18-year-old son was at the wheel.

Roles alleged by the prosecution

The prosecution’s case is that the 31-year-old defendant drove the van from which the shots were fired. One of the two 28-year-old defendants is believed to be the gunman, while the other is believed to have driven the getaway car. The attackers used that car to flee after leaving a motorcycle behind.

Other suspects

Three more people were initially charged in the case but are no longer defendants. Proceedings against a 30-year-old and a 51-year-old were dropped at an earlier hearing. A second 30-year-old was charged only with car theft and received a sentence of 18 months in prison.

Next steps

The court will reconvene on November 2. The three defendants remain in custody at the central prisons.
