Trump sets July 4 deadline for EU to meet trade deal terms or face higher U.S. tariffs

Washington, United States. U.S. President Donald Trump said he had a “great call” with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and would give the European Union until July 4 to fulfill its side of a trade deal. He said U.S. tariffs would rise to much higher levels if the EU does not comply.

Trade deal deadline and tariff warning

Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he had been waiting for the EU to fulfill its side of what he called a “Historic Trade Deal” agreed in Turnberry, Scotland, and said the EU had promised to cut its tariffs to zero under the agreement. He said he agreed to give von der Leyen until the United States’ 250th birthday, adding that otherwise EU tariffs would immediately jump to much higher levels.

Trump had said on Friday that he would increase tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25% this week, from 15% currently, citing EU non-compliance with the terms of a deal he said was struck in Scotland last July.

Iran discussion

Trump said he and von der Leyen also discussed Iran and agreed that Tehran can never have a nuclear weapon.
