Two scooter riders injured after leaving Kato Paphos promenade

Paphos, Cyprus. Two users of personal mobility devices suffered minor injuries on Friday after apparently losing control of their scooters on a promenade in the tourist area of Kato Paphos and ending up on rocks by the sea.

The incident also put dozens of tourists walking in the area at risk, as concerns continue over the uncontrolled use of electric scooters in the city.

Rescue by visitors

Several visitors witnessed the incident and rushed to assist the riders. They climbed down into the water and onto the rocks below the promenade before helping the two people return to the walkway.

The riders escaped with minor injuries and grazes.

Municipality response

Acting mayor Angelos Onisiforou addressed the issue in a written statement on Saturday, following similar dangerous incidents reported frequently in Paphos during this period.

He said Paphos municipality, in cooperation with Paphos traffic police, was continuing efforts to address the uncontrolled use of personal mobility devices and other wheeled vehicles on promenades and in public spaces.

Onisiforou thanked Paphos traffic police for their organisation, coordination and enforcement efforts. He said the initiative concerned not only enforcing the law but also protecting pedestrians.

He added that residents, elderly people, parents with children and visitors should be able to feel safe when walking along promenades, stressing that pedestrian areas are intended for pedestrians.
