Nicosia, Cyprus. Used vehicles continued to drive growth in Cyprus’ motor market during the first eight months of 2026, while registrations of new vehicles remained below the previous year’s level, according to figures released by the statistical service Cystat on Tuesday.
A total of 38,564 motor vehicles were registered from January to August, up 11.2 per cent from 34,668 in the corresponding period of 2025.
New and used vehicle registrations
Used vehicle registrations rose by 22.7 per cent to 23,923, compared with 19,504 during the first eight months of 2025. Registrations of new vehicles fell by 3.4 per cent to 14,641 from 15,164.
In August, total registrations increased by 8.9 per cent to 3,777, from 3,468 in August 2025. New registrations rose by 1.4 per cent to 1,124, while used vehicle registrations increased by 12.4 per cent to 2,653.
Passenger cars and rental vehicles
Passenger saloon cars remained the largest segment of the market, with registrations rising by 10.9 per cent to 29,902 in the first eight months of the year, compared with 26,961 in the same period of 2025.
Of the passenger cars registered, 9,326, or 31.2 per cent, were new and 20,576, or 68.8 per cent, were used.
Passenger car registrations in August rose by 9.2 per cent to 3,061, compared with 2,803 in the same month last year.
Rental car registrations declined by 14.2 per cent to 3,468 between January and August, from 4,044 a year earlier.
Hybrid vehicles
Hybrid vehicles accounted for 52.4 per cent of passenger car registrations, up from 43.6 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.
