Nicosia, Cyprus. Used vehicles drove growth in Cyprus’ motor market in the first nine months of 2026, while new vehicle registrations declined, according to figures released by the statistical service (Cystat) on Friday. Total motor vehicle registrations rose by 9.1 per cent to 43,890, from 40,212 in the same period of 2025.


Gap widens between new and used vehicles

Used vehicle registrations increased by 19.9 per cent to 27,473 between January and September, from 22,916 a year earlier. New vehicle registrations fell by 5.1 per cent to 16,417, from 17,296, widening the gap between the two categories.

The same pattern continued in September, although total registrations declined by 3.9 per cent to 5,326, compared with 5,544 in September 2025.

New vehicle registrations fell by 16.7 per cent during the month to 1,776, while used vehicle registrations rose by 4 per cent to 3,550.

Passenger cars remain the largest segment

Passenger saloon cars remained by far the largest segment of the market. Registrations rose by 9 per cent to 34,156 in the first nine months of 2026, from 31,325 in the corresponding period of 2025.

Of these, 10,521, or 30.8 per cent, were new vehicles, while 23,635, or 69.2 per cent, were used.

In September, passenger car registrations declined by 2.5 per cent to 4,254, compared with 4,364 a year earlier.

Rental registrations fall as hybrids gain share

Rental car registrations recorded a sharper decline over the nine-month period, falling by 17.1 per cent to 3,780, from 4,559.

Hybrids accounted for 53 per cent of passenger car registrations, up from 44 per cent a year earlier.
