Woman remains in intensive care after supermarket stabbing in northern Nicosia

Nicosia, Cyprus. A 22-year-old woman remained in intensive care on Tuesday after being stabbed multiple times at a supermarket in the northern Nicosia suburb of Taskinkoy. Her condition stabilised overnight, but her life was still reported to be in danger.

Medical condition

According to news website Bugun Kibris, the woman’s haemoglobin levels stabilised, indicating that the rate of blood loss had been reduced. Doctors were still attempting to control internal bleeding.

She may require further surgery because of damage to her liver, while the possible effects of rapid blood loss on her brain remained unclear. She underwent initial surgery after being admitted to hospital on Monday.

The 31-year-old man, who also stabbed himself after the attack, was reported to be in a stable condition and not in life-threatening danger.

Supermarket attack

The incident occurred inside the Metropol supermarket in Taskinkoy shortly before midday on Monday. The man first stabbed the woman and then stabbed himself.

Response from deputy parliament speaker

On Monday evening, the north’s deputy parliament speaker, Fazilet Ozdenefe, said the incident highlighted a “multifaceted safety problem”.

She referred to rapidly changing demographics, immigration policies, a lack of oversight and what she described as the government’s disregard for society’s safety concerns, saying these issues required discussion and solutions.

Ozdenefe said each problem must be viewed from the appropriate perspective and cautioned against interpreting the attack solely through the identity or origin of the perpetrator.

“Regardless of the perpetrator’s nationality, ethnicity, or social class, the male-dominated mentality which considers itself entitled to exert power and control over women knows no bounds,” she said.
