Nicosia, Cyprus. The meteorological department issued a yellow weather warning until 5pm on Friday after heavy rain and thunderstorms affected the western parts of the island in the morning. Isolated heavy storms, hail and strong winds are expected during the day.


Weather forecast

Heavy storms with hail are initially expected in the western half of the island before spreading to other areas.

After midday, rainfall is expected to mainly affect the higher mountains and the eastern half of the island, with conditions forecast to improve noticeably later in the day.

Rainfall intensity is expected to range between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour. Localised hail and strong wind gusts of up to 8 Beaufort may also occur.

Thunderstorms and fire

The most intense thunderstorms were recorded in Paphos and Polis Chrysochou overnight from Thursday to Friday. Intense thunderstorms also began in Larnaca and the western part of the island on Friday morning.

A lightning strike caused a fire at a restaurant near Lara beach in the Paphos area during the early hours of Friday. The fire broke out at around 2am, caused extensive damage to the property and was brought under full control by 5am.
