Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus placed third among EU members for tourism intensity in 2025, recording 19.4 overnight stays in tourist accommodation for each resident, Eurostat reported. Only Croatia and Malta had higher figures, at 24.5 and 21.7 respectively.

Tourism activity relative to population

Eurostat’s report placed Cyprus among the EU countries with the greatest tourism activity relative to their resident populations. Greece ranked next with 15.1 nights per resident, followed by Austria with 14.6.

The EU average rose to 7.0 nights per resident in 2025 from 6.7 a year earlier. Romania had the lowest intensity, at 1.6, while Latvia recorded 2.7. Poland and Slovakia each registered 2.9.

EU overnight stays reach 3.1 billion

According to Eurostat, tourist accommodation across the EU registered 3.1 billion overnight stays in 2025, a rise of 4.1 per cent from the 2024 total of 3.0 billion.

The 2025 figure was also 26.5 per cent higher than the 2.5 billion nights recorded in 2015.

Origins of visitors

Eurostat reported that domestic and international visitors generated nearly equal shares of EU overnight stays in 2025.

Together, visitors travelling within their own countries and those arriving from other EU member states contributed 80.9 per cent of all nights, or approximately 2.5 billion stays. Visitors from European countries outside the EU contributed another 10.4 per cent.

Travellers from the Americas — North, Central and South America — represented 4.9 per cent of overnight stays, equivalent to 155.5 million nights.
