Nicosia, Cyprus. A series of horror-themed film events will keep the Halloween mood going this weekend and into the first week of November in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca.

Motherwitch in Nicosia

Premier Cinemas at the Nicosia Mall will show Motherwitch, described as the first Cypriot horror and folk-gothic film, from October 30 to November 4. It was directed by Minos Papas.

The story takes place in 1882. Eleni tries to bring back her dead children from the shadows, yet ends up calling forth the ancient Kalikantzari of Cypriot folklore. She then has to face the storm of her grief and anger and break the curse.

Pop-up film night in Limassol

On Saturday, October 31, CyFi Fest will hold a pop-up Halloween Film night at Apollon Cinema in Limassol, in the run-up to its next edition next year. Two films are on the programme.

The evening opens with a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Donnie Darko, the cult sci-fi classic by Richard Kelly. It is followed by the supernatural techno-horror film Bloat, directed by Pablo Absento and starring Ben McKenzie and Bojana Novakovic.

Producer Maria Zatulovskaya will introduce Bloat, and a live Q&A will follow the screening. Attendees are invited to come in Halloween or cosplay costumes for a chance to win a special gift.

Halloween evening in Larnaca

A Halloween film night is also planned for October 31 at the Municipal Market in Larnaca. The Larnaca Cinema Society is organising the evening, which features a classic film combining music, comedy and horror.
