Kyiv, Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned airlines, insurance companies and other users of Russian airspace on Tuesday that Ukrainian drones had made Russian skies dangerous and effectively closed.

He said Ukraine posed no threat to civil aviation, but that drones would be present in Russian skies and this should be taken into account.

Warning to airspace users

In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy said the warning applied to every airline using Russian airspace, every insurer and everyone still using key Russian airports.

“Today, we want to warn every airline that uses Russian airspace, every insurer, everyone who still uses key Russian airports: the Russian sky is becoming completely dangerous,” he said.

“Although Russian authorities are not properly announcing it, Russian airspace will effectively be closing. The war started by Russia is closing its own skies,” Zelenskiy added.

Escalating attacks

Russia has stepped up air attacks on Kyiv and other cities in recent weeks. Moscow’s latest strike killed 12 people and injured many more, marking the sixth consecutive day of intense assaults on the Ukrainian capital.

Ukraine has responded with frequent drone strikes on Russian targets, many linked to the country’s oil industry as well as retail sites.
