Nicosia hosts street performances, video art and technology festivals
Nicosia’s cultural programme this month includes participatory street performances, video installations, live music and events for young audiences.

Nicosia, Cyprus. Street theatre, contemporary circus, live music, exhibitions and performances for younger audiences feature in the capital’s cultural programme this month. Events range from participatory outdoor productions to video art in neighbourhood workplaces and installations linking art with technology.
ArtCargo makes its Nicosia debut
ArtCargo Festival’s first edition in Nicosia brings together artists representing nine countries, with ten productions and over 30 performances. Running until October 25, its programme takes theatre, comedy, acrobatics, circus and other acts into unusual settings around the city centre.
The downtown performances continue through next Sunday, encouraging people passing by to pause, watch and take action. Audience participation forms part of the festival, with productions staged in trees and public squares, along streets and on 300 wine glasses.
The festival’s central installation, Parametric Deep, is a co-production with Panos Malactos and Curiosity Media Lab. It projects a dancer’s body onto a screen of water, using algorithms alongside movement and light to transform the image.
Video art enters neighbourhood spaces
PSI Foundation is presenting Objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear, a series of video art interventions throughout old Nicosia. The exhibition places works in studios used by artists and architects, former workshops and other premises, offering visitors a different setting in which to encounter art.
Evagoria Dapola curates the exhibition, which occupies three streets and features nine artists: Maria Anastassiou, Nadim Choufi, Danae Io, Stelios Kallinikou, Kakia Catselli, Aristotelis Nicolas Mochloulis, Alexandros Pissourios, Janis Rafa and Constantinos Taliotis.
The project examines encounters with art outside traditional exhibition venues, integrating the works into a neighbourhood’s working life, daily movements and routines.
Its nine locations are The Gym Bar, MERES Cultural Center, Mobhaus design store, NOL Design Studio, NiMAC, Kartzin x Visual Voices, Cloudyworks, and premises at 6 Sapfous Street and 33–35 Aischylou Street.
Art, science and technology meet
The WIP Arts & Technology Festival also continues in central Nicosia until October 25. Its programme comprises over 50 works by more than 60 artists representing 15 countries.
Under this year’s theme, Flows, exhibitions, installations, performances, workshops and talks examine relationships between technology, science and art. Activities are taking place at CYENS and other venues throughout old Nicosia.
Children’s performing arts festival closes today
