“Plutus” (play)

Plutus

Tuesday 19th, Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd of July at 21:00

As part of the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama, the new theatre group “Ftochologia” will present Aristophanes’ last surviving comedy “Plutus” in Nicosia, Paphos and Limassol.

Chremylos, who is buried in debts, is making his way to Delphi in order to ask the oracle whether he should bring up his son as an honest man or as a criminal. On his way back he meets Plutus (the god of prosperity in Greek mythology), who was blinded by Zeus, so that he cannot distinguish between the honest and dishonest people in order to randomly distribute the wealth. With the help of Chremylos and his slave Carion, Plutus restores his sight in the Asklepis’ temple and decides to restore justice in the society. Whilst everyone tries to take advantage of the situation, the goddess of Poverty arrives and tries to persuade everyone that happiness is not in the size of the wealth.

In his comedy “Plutos” (prosperity) Aristophanes points out the social injustice and ridicules not only unfair distribution of wealth, but also the corruption.

The play will be shown with English subtitles.
