Enrolling a child at a state primary school in Cyprus
Age, school catchment area, documents, online application and confirmation of a place at a state primary school.

Checked: 27 September 2026.
Who is admitted and where
State primary schools in Cyprus admit children based on the school catchment area corresponding to their home address. For Year 1, the official regulations specify an age requirement: the child must have reached the age of 6 before 1 September of the year of enrolment.
Attendance at state primary schools is free for children living in Cyprus, regardless of their nationality. The absence of a standard document does not mean that a child can be denied an education: the school and the district education office will explain which forms of proof are acceptable in each specific case. Do not delay contacting them because of doubts regarding your status or the translation of documents.
Enrolment is usually linked to a specific school within the local education authority. A general guide to choosing between state, private and international schools helps you to compare the different systems, but does not replace the enrolment process.
When to submit an application
The Ministry describes the main enrolment window for primary schools as taking place in January, with the exact dates and application channels announced annually. As at the date of verifying the sources, 27 September 2026, the 2026–2027 enrolment period cannot be carried over to the following academic year.
Following your initial application, you may be required to confirm your enrolment by a specific deadline; according to the official guidelines, this is usually in the spring. Keep a record of your application number, any correspondence and the school’s instructions so that you do not mistake a submitted form for confirmation of your place.
Families who move house after the main enrolment period must contact their nearest school and the local education authority. Late applications may be subject to availability and will not automatically result in the creation of a new class. Do not wait until the first day of term if your address is already known: provide details of your child’s age, previous year group and date of arrival in advance to receive a personalised guide to the enrolment process.
School catchment area and address
Check the current map or list of school catchment areas for the academic year and the exact address of your home. Boundaries may be updated; the nearest school may not necessarily be the one for your home. Ask the school or local education authority to confirm in writing that your address falls within the catchment area, particularly if you are signing a tenancy agreement specifically to live in a particular catchment area.
Documents confirming your place of residence may be required for registration. The official guidelines list utility bills and, in some circumstances, a tenancy agreement; please check the specific requirements in the notice for your year.
A transfer outside the local catchment area requires a separate decision by the relevant authority. Usually, the child is first enrolled in their local school, and then a request for a transfer is submitted; there may be exceptions for some families, as specified in the current regulations. Do not withdraw your child from their current school and do not promise them a place at another school until you have received written confirmation of the transfer.
The child’s documents
For initial registration, the Ministry requires the application form, a birth certificate or an acceptable official document for a child born abroad, proof of address and details of vaccinations from the child’s health record. Please check the latest form and the requirements for copies.
If your family does not have a Cypriot certificate or an ARC, please inform the school: the official procedure allows for other official documents and for details to be verified on a case-by-case basis. Do not assume that the absence of a single document automatically deprives your child of the right to attend school.
When enrolling in Year 1, you may need to provide a certificate confirming completion of an approved pre-school programme. For children arriving from another country or programme, the procedure may differ. Find out in advance what documents you need to obtain from your child’s previous school, whether a translation is required, and to whom you should submit the originals – without sending your child’s personal details via unsecured chat platforms.
Electronic submission and confirmation
The Ministry is developing the eΔΕΑ electronic system; the relevant channel and the steps parents need to take are specified in the announcement for each specific intake. Set up your own account, provide a contact email address and prepare your documents in advance, but do not trust any third-party websites that promise to ‘guarantee a place’ in return for a fee. Check the portal’s address on the Ministry’s official website.
Before submitting, please check your name, date of birth, address, chosen school and the images of your documents. Save your submission confirmation and check whether you have received a message regarding any necessary corrections. If the system displays an error or does not accept the document, please contact the official support team or your local office; resubmitting without understanding the reason may cause confusion.
Once you have submitted your application, please look out for a separate confirmation notice regarding your place and the school’s instructions. Ask when your child needs to attend in person, how to arrange school meals or after-school care (if available), and who will be the family’s designated contact person. Enrolment and additional services may have different application forms and deadlines.
If a child is transferring from another system
If you are moving house in the middle of the school year, please gather your child’s school report, details of the curriculum they have covered and the contact details of their previous school. Placement in a specific year group is determined by age and the applicable regulations, whilst language support requires a separate discussion. Do not promise your child the same class number simply because they were in that class in another country.
Ask how the school supports pupils who do not yet speak Greek, and how parents receive feedback during the first few months. Agree on a realistic plan for settling in, rather than expecting immediate grades on a par with their classmates. If there are any signs of special educational needs, find out separately about the official assessment and support process.
Before leaving your current school, collect your documents and confirm your graduation date. If your family is moving to a new address within Cyprus, check the rules regarding transfers and the transfer of information to ensure there is no gap in your child’s attendance. Make separate arrangements for a safe route for your child to and from school; school transport is not automatically provided upon enrolment.
Checklist and relevance
First, determine the year group and age, then confirm the school catchment area, find the advert for the relevant academic year, gather the necessary documents and submit your application via the authorised channel. Once you have submitted your application, save the confirmation, complete the place confirmation stage and receive practical instructions from the school. It is best to note the date and source of the response for each step.
The sources for this article were verified on 27 September 2026. The age threshold and general procedure are set out on the official websites, but specific dates, forms, districts and online procedures are subject to change. Before registering for the following year, check the latest publication from the Ministry and clarify any uncertainties with your local education authority.
This information helps you prepare questions and documents, but does not constitute an individual decision on admission or transfer. If your child does not have the standard documentation, your family arrived late, or special support is required, please contact the school and the relevant department directly. Do not pass on your child’s passport, medical or school details to intermediaries without a clear, legitimate purpose.
