Sick leave in Cyprus: documents and benefits for employees
How to confirm your incapacity for work, notify your employer and apply separately for sickness benefit through the Social Insurance Services.

Three different questions about sick leave
If an employee in Cyprus falls ill, they must separately confirm their incapacity for work, notify their employer of their absence and check their entitlement to state sickness benefit. A medical certificate does not automatically entitle the employee to full pay. Payment by the employer depends on the applicable terms and conditions of employment, whilst the benefit depends on insurance requirements and the decision of the Social Insurance Services.
This guide covers employment in the Republic of Cyprus and helps you organise the necessary paperwork. Different procedures may apply in the case of workplace injuries, long-term incapacity for work and specific sectors. Do not record a workplace accident as a common illness simply because it makes it easier to arrange time off work.
Start by seeking medical attention in good time and informing your employer through the designated channel. Check who to send the confirmation to, when the next document is due, and who is responsible for keeping track of your absence.
Medical certificate
Ask your doctor to issue a document that is suitable for the purpose of your application: your employer and the benefits authority may require specific forms or details. Check the name, dates and the period of incapacity for work. A certificate confirming a visit to the doctor and a confirmation of incapacity for work do not always describe the same thing; check the content of the document carefully.
If the illness persists, arrange for a medical assessment and an extension of the certified period. Keep the original documents or paper copies, noting the date you received them; do not alter the dates yourself, even if the original certificate appears to have been issued incorrectly.
Only share medical information via a suitable, secure channel and to the extent necessary. If your employer requires an additional document, ask them to explain its purpose and the grounds for the request, particularly when the request concerns a detailed diagnosis.
How to report an absence to your employer
Find the contract, collective agreement and rules regarding sick leave. Record when the notification was sent and received, the expected duration of the absence and the procedure for handing over urgent tasks. The employer must understand that the absence is due to a verified incapacity for work, rather than unauthorised leave or a loss of contact.
Please clarify what status is recorded on the timesheet and how this affects salary calculations. The contract may provide for paid days or a supplement to the allowance, but such a condition cannot be assumed to apply equally to all employees. Ask for a written explanation if the payment differs from the usual calculation or from sick pay for the previous period.
If your employer asks you to carry on with your usual duties whilst you are on certified sick leave, discuss this with your doctor and clarify the implications for your record and benefits. Do not attempt to claim the same days as both full-time work and a complete absence. The actual circumstances must correspond to the information you provide.
Application for sickness benefit
The official online sickness benefit service requires the use of a verified CY Login account. Please check the login details and application requirements in good time. If online submission is not available for your situation, check with Social Insurance Services to find out what alternative methods are permitted; do not simply ignore the issue if you are unable to access the service.
Entitlement depends on the applicable insurance conditions, not merely on the fact that you are currently in employment. The benefits office may require medical evidence, details of your employment and your insurance history. Please refer to the current form and guidance for the list of requirements and time limits: the previous description or the duration of another benefit cannot be automatically carried over to sickness benefit.
Once you have submitted your application, make a note of the application number, the date, the documents you have attached and the submission confirmation. Keep an eye out for requests from the service for further information and for the employer’s involvement.
Payment, waiting periods and insurance history
The benefit does not necessarily correspond to your full salary and may be subject to specific conditions regarding when payments commence, the calculation period and the maximum duration. Ask for an explanation regarding your own insurance history. Do not use someone else’s figure as a benchmark: even an identical diagnosis does not necessarily mean the same employment status, insurance details or entitlement amount.
If the employer pays a salary or a supplement, check how this relates to the benefit. Various contractual arrangements are possible; double payments should not be assumed to belong definitively to the employee without verification. Check the time periods and decisions to avoid confusing a payment for a current illness with a late payment for a previous insured event.
If there is a discrepancy in your contribution history, please contact the service and ask the payroll department for an explanation. Keep your contract and payslips; however, the presence of a ‘Social Insurance’ line does not in itself confirm the insurance period shown. If you are working in several countries, inform the service of this and clarify the applicable coordination procedure.
A prolonged illness and a return
In the event of a prolonged absence, it is important to clarify in advance the next steps regarding medical assessment, the possible extension of benefits and other relevant measures. Do not assume that the end of a benefit payment automatically means the termination of your employment contract. The duration of benefits, your state of health and the implications for your employment are assessed according to different rules.
Arrange your return to work in accordance with your medical condition, the nature of your duties and the applicable health and safety requirements. If you require any work restrictions or changes to your role, discuss the relevant documentation and procedures with your doctor and employer. Do not promise a specific adaptation or a definitive solution without first assessing the situation: what matters are the facts and the applicable rights.
If you are facing the threat of dismissal whilst on sick leave, do not rely on the assertion that dismissal is either always prohibited or always permissible. Protection, notice and grounds for termination require a separate legal assessment. Obtain a written decision and seek assistance in good time, whilst keeping your sickness and employment records safe.
How to sort out the paperwork
For your employer, please prepare the dates of your absence, confirmation of notification, supporting documents and any enquiries regarding your timesheet or pay. For Social Insurance Services, you will need the application number, insurance details and a specific enquiry regarding benefits. Splitting your enquiries means you do not have to wait for a response from the body that is not responsible for the matter in question.
The official website lists the Social Insurance Services and the contact number 1450 for sickness benefit. For matters relating to employment conditions, please contact the Department of Labour Relations; for work-related injuries, the procedure handled by the Department of Labour Inspection is also important. If you wish to appeal against a decision, please check the deadlines and procedure set out in the decision itself without delay.
Check that the period has been confirmed by a doctor, that your employer has received notification, that your absence has been correctly recorded, and that the claim has been submitted in accordance with the current guidelines. Keep decisions and payments separate for each instance of sickness. This set of documents helps to trace the progress of the claim; it does not confirm entitlement to benefit until assessed by the authorised service.
