Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou to leave post for education role

Nicosia, Cyprus. Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou will leave her post to take up a position in the education sector, Deputy Government Spokesman Yiannis Antoniou said on Friday.

Antoniou said Panayiotou must be replaced, while any wider cabinet changes remain a matter for President Nikos Christodoulides.

Teaching appointment

Panayiotou, a philology teacher, was included in February on the Educational Service Commission’s list of appointees for teaching positions starting in September.

Speaking to Omega television, Antoniou said it was certain that the agriculture minister would need to be replaced because she would take up a role in the education sector.

Possible cabinet changes

Antoniou said he could not comment on any other possible plans by the president, saying he did not have details of them.

He said he had information and understood certain developments, but added that announcements on ministerial appointments and dismissals should be left to the president.

Asked whether he had confirmed that Panayiotou would return to teaching in September and leave the ministry, Antoniou said this was “abundantly clear.”
