Alma leader Odysseas Michaelides files candidacy in Nicosia district for parliamentary elections

Nicosia, Cyprus. Alma founder and leader Odysseas Michaelides on Wednesday filed his candidacy for the forthcoming parliamentary elections at the top of his party’s list in the Nicosia district. He described the elections as “a celebration of democracy”.

Candidacy and campaign message

Michaelides said Alma’s candidates are “clean individuals with experience in their field” and said the party aims to “change Cyprus with boldness and a plan”. He said the party’s policies extend beyond highlighting problems, adding that its platform is based on “32 thematic issues”.

Call for political culture

Michaelides expressed hope that in the 18 days leading up to the elections, political discourse would maintain “a good level of political culture”.

Party background and polling

Michaelides previously served as auditor-general until he was relieved of his duties by the Supreme Constitutional in September 2024. He established Alma last year, and the party has typically polled between fourth and sixth place, running close to social media influencer Fidias Panayiotou’s Direct Democracy Cyprus, which was also established last year.

Notable candidate

Among Alma’s most high-profile candidates is Irene Charalambides, who served in parliament as a member of Akel between 2011 and February this year. She moved to Alma after party regulations prevented her from seeking a fourth term on Akel’s ballot.

What do you think will be the main issue influencing your vote in the upcoming parliamentary elections?
