Body found in unclaimed morgue section at Larnaca General Hospital nearly two months after death

Larnaca, Cyprus. The body of a man was found in the unclaimed section of the morgue at Larnaca General Hospital nearly two months after his death, according to a report on Friday.

Family search

The deceased’s son, Klaudios Antoniou, told Sigma TV that his family had been searching for his father since March, after he was admitted to hospital on March 19 with cancer. Antoniou said the family was not informed at the time of the admission.

He said his father had wanted to go through the illness alone and did not want people around to support him. Antoniou described him as independent and said he often lived or travelled abroad for long periods.

Calls from the hospital

Antoniou said the family received two calls from the hospital on March 26 that were not answered. When they called back shortly afterwards, they were told the patient had not been admitted.

“There was no file in the system. They insisted that he was not admitted, nor did he leave, there was no trace,” he said.

According to Antoniou, the family contacted relatives and hospitals but could not find any record of his father.

Death and discovery

He said the family was later informed that the man died at 10.50am on March 26. Antoniou said the body was found last Thursday after the family asked police to help check hospital records.
