Christou says Elam faces greater responsibility after doubling seats in parliament

Nicosia, Cyprus. Elam leader Christos Christou said on Sunday night that a “greater responsibility” now rests on him and his party after Elam doubled its parliamentary seats from four to eight in the day’s election. He said the result means “serious work begins tomorrow.”

Election result

Christou described the outcome as a “significant, huge victory” and said Elam now sees a greater responsibility “for the future of Cypriot Hellenism in the next five years.” He said the party’s promise is to work hard to justify the choice of those who voted for it.

Party positions

Christou said Elam will continue to defend what it proclaims and advocates “with greater zeal.” He said the party’s principles remain unchanged and identified social justice and the preservation of religious and national identity as its main mission.

Response to polling and rival results

Asked whether a stronger-than-expected result for Disy may have limited Elam’s performance, Christou said that was “possible,” but added that his party achieved “the biggest and most significant victory.” He said Elam had doubled its number of seats, “something no other party has achieved.”
