Larnaca, Cyprus. The Court of Appeals has dismissed an appeal against 16-year prison sentences imposed on a man convicted of two counts of attempted murder in connection with a December 2022 incident in Larnaca.
The court upheld the first-instance ruling, finding that the sentences were not excessive.
Appeal decision
In its decision issued on July 9, the Court of Appeals said the criminal court had considered the seriousness of the offences, which resulted in injuries to a man and a six-year-old boy, as well as mitigating evidence.
The man faced seven charges, including conspiracy to murder, attempted murder, and possession of a class A firearm and ammunition.
Sentences upheld
The appellant admitted all charges before the criminal court. He was sentenced to seven years for conspiracy to murder, 16 years for each of the two attempted murder counts, and six years for each firearms and ammunition offence.
In his appeal, he argued that the criminal court should not have imposed identical sentences for the two attempted murder convictions and that the 16-year term was excessive.
Victims’ injuries
The Court of Appeals rejected both grounds of appeal. It noted that both the intended target and the child who was in the car were seriously injured.
The court also said the boy continued to be monitored by a clinical psychologist.
