Cypriot participants join 16 European Defence Fund projects with €14 million in expected EU funding

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ defence ministry said 10 Cypriot participants have secured involvement in European Defence Fund projects, with expected European Commission funding of about €14 million. The statement followed the Commission’s evaluation report on proposals submitted under the EDF work programme.

EDF project selections and Cypriot participation

The defence ministry confirmed on Friday that the European Commission selected 57 projects for funding across the EU, with an overall budget exceeding €1 billion. It said Cypriot enterprises are involved in 16 of the approved projects.

National co-financing and ministry assessment

The ministry said national co-financing of around €1.5 million will support the successful Cypriot proposals, in line with its research and development strategy. It described the outcome as reflecting its policy to strengthen innovation and competitiveness in Cyprus’ defence and security ecosystem, and said it showed growing integration into European defence research programmes.

Wider EU defence funding initiatives

The EDF supports collaborative defence research and capability development across EU member states to strengthen technological cooperation and reduce fragmentation in the European defence sector. The ministry noted that Cyprus’ participation comes alongside wider EU defence funding initiatives, including European Council approval earlier this year of almost €1.2 billion in loans for Cyprus under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme to support defence investment and the acquisition of modern military equipment.

What do you think Cyprus’ increased participation in EU defence programmes could mean for its domestic defence and security ecosystem?
