Cyprus approves additional 3.5 million cubic metres of water for irrigation

Nicosia, Cyprus. The council of ministers on Tuesday approved the allocation of an additional 3.5 million cubic metres of water for irrigation, including 2 million cubic metres for the wider Paphos region and 1.5 million cubic metres for the southern conveyor project.

Revised allocation

The agriculture ministry said the revised distribution of water reserves by region was based on updated hydrological data, following an assessment of actual water supply and irrigation needs in the respective regions.

Water quantities for 2026

According to the ministry, the total water quantities for 2026 were set at 121.7 million cubic metres for general water supply and an additional 41.2 million cubic metres for irrigation.

Three-year strategy

The decision forms part of a new strategic management framework to address water scarcity over the next three years and to ensure water safety and reserves.

Government measures

As part of its broader effort to ensure water safety, the government has moved ahead with several measures, including the installation of desalination units, efforts to reduce water losses in networks, and the use of reclaimed water, the ministry said. These measures are intended to cover the needs of both residents and the agricultural sector.
