Cyprus hospital bed numbers reach decade high in 2024

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus had 3,211 hospital beds in 2024, the highest number recorded over the past decade, according to the latest Eurostat figures. The total rose from 3,062 in 2023.

Cyprus figures

The number of hospital beds in Cyprus corresponded to 329 beds per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024, compared with 320 per 100,000 in the previous year.

Despite the increase, Cyprus remained below the European Union average of 507 hospital beds per 100,000 inhabitants.

EU trend

Across the EU, the average number of hospital beds declined from 511 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023 to 507 in 2024.

Eurostat said the long-term decrease, from 582 beds per 100,000 inhabitants in 2009, reflects advances in medical technology that have shortened hospital stays and shifted many procedures to outpatient or day-care treatment.

Highest and lowest ratios

Bulgaria recorded the highest number of hospital beds relative to population, at 870 per 100,000 inhabitants. Germany followed with 759, Romania with 731, Austria with 655 and Czechia with 639.

Six EU countries recorded fewer than 300 hospital beds per 100,000 inhabitants: Sweden with 187, the Netherlands with 221, Denmark with 226, Finland with 248, Spain with 283 and Ireland with 293.

Long-term care beds

For long-term care in nursing homes and other residential facilities, the Netherlands recorded the highest ratio, with 1,390 beds per 100,000 inhabitants. Sweden followed with 1,298 and Belgium with 1,249.

Greece recorded the lowest rate, at 20 beds per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Bulgaria with 26 and Portugal with 94.
