Cyprus pledges at least €850,000 in humanitarian aid for Sudan and neighbouring countries in 2026

Berlin, Germany. Cyprus has pledged at least €850,000 in humanitarian assistance for Sudan and neighbouring countries in 2026, as the civil war enters its fourth year. The pledge was announced during the third international Sudan conference in Berlin.

CyprusAid pledge and planned allocation

Cyprus made the commitment through CyprusAid, the foreign ministry said in a social media post. The ministry said the funds will be used to support populations affected by the civil war, including vulnerable children and women.

The foreign ministry said the funds will be spent in Sudan and in neighbouring South Sudan, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Eritrea, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Cameroon and Egypt.

International conference in Berlin

The Sudan conference took place in Berlin earlier this week. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said at its conclusion that attendees had pledged more than €1.5 billion in humanitarian assistance.

Wadephul said the pledges help to alleviate suffering, save lives, and show that the conflict has not been forgotten.

Scale of the conflict and humanitarian impact

Civil war broke out in Sudan in 2023. Estimates indicate that as many as 400,000 people may have been killed.

Around 25 million people have been affected by an ensuing famine, and as many as four million children are estimated to be acutely malnourished. Almost nine million people have been internally displaced as a result of the war so far.

What impact do you think international aid pledges will have on the humanitarian situation in Sudan and the region?
