Cyprus seeks stronger ties with Kazakhstan during Christodoulides visit to Astana

Astana, Kazakhstan. Cyprus is ready to strengthen cooperation with Kazakhstan, particularly in business, connectivity, energy, investments and tourism, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday during an official visit to Astana. He held a private meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and signed several memoranda of understanding in a range of sectors.

Agreements signed in multiple sectors

Christodoulides said the memoranda covered higher education, scientific research, culture, sports, innovation, digital governance and information technologies.

He said the agreements were not simply technical arrangements, but tangible proof of a shared ambition to turn the potential of bilateral relations into a more structured and substantive framework of cooperation.

First visit by a Cypriot president

In a statement issued after the meeting, Christodoulides said it was a pleasure and an honour to be in Kazakhstan, noting that he was the first president of the Republic of Cyprus to visit the country.

He said that in their discussions, the two presidents confirmed their political will to further strengthen relations between Cyprus and Kazakhstan, which he said continue to grow politically, economically and strategically.

Focus on political dialogue and economic ties

Christodoulides said the two sides also underlined the importance of maintaining regular exchanges at all levels, adding that sustained political dialogue is essential for building trust and delivering tangible results.

He said the two presidents discussed significant opportunities in trade, investment and economic cooperation, where Cyprus and Kazakhstan have complementary advantages that can bring their peoples and economies closer together.

Business and transport links

Christodoulides said Kazakhstan is strengthening its role as a major economic and transport hub in Central Asia, while Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union and the Eurozone, offers stability, predictability and a fully EU-aligned business environment, serving as a gateway to Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

He said the two sides explored opportunities for enhanced cooperation in financial services, shipping, ICT, FinTech, logistics and renewable energy, as well as closer cooperation with the Astana International Financial Centre.

Direct flights launched

Christodoulides also highlighted the launch of direct air links connecting Larnaca with Astana and Almaty, describing it as a substantial development aimed at bringing people closer together and opening new avenues for tourism, trade and broader business cooperation.

He said he and his delegation arrived in Astana on the inaugural direct flight from Larnaca.
