Cyprus Symphony Orchestra to perform Rutter’s Requiem and Mozart’s Exsultate in Easter concerts

Limassol, Cyprus. The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will open the Easter period with concerts featuring John Rutter’s Requiem and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Exsultate in Limassol on April 2 and Nicosia on April 3.

Programme and performers

The Events 1 – Rutter: Requiem concerts will feature Georgian conductor Levan Jagaev, sopranos Mariza Anastasiades and Eleni Charalambous, and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra Choir.

About Rutter’s Requiem

The orchestra said John Rutter’s Requiem, composed in 1985, is an intimate, contemplative and lyrical meditation on the themes of life and death, moving “towards light rather than darkness.” It added that Rutter stated his approach to the genre was influenced and inspired by Faure’s Requiem.
According to the orchestra, the seven sections form an arch-like meditation: the first and last movements are prayers to God on behalf of humanity; the second and sixth are psalms; the third and fifth are personal prayers to Jesus Christ; and the Sanctus, described by the composer as “celebratory and affirmative,” forms the centre with bells as in the Roman Mass.

About Mozart’s Exsultate

The orchestra said Mozart’s Exsultate “sets the seal on resurrection joy,” citing its virtuosic vocal writing, buoyant rhythms and luminous melodies.

Dates, venues, and ticket information

The April 2 concert will be held at Rialto Theatre in Limassol, and the April 3 concert at Strovolos Municipal Theatre in Nicosia. Both concerts begin at 8.30pm. Ticket information is available at 7777-7040 and www.ticketmaster.cy.
