Rome, Italy. Cyprus won a gold medal at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) 2026 for the second consecutive year, following the competition held in Italy from May 12 to May 18, 2026. The Cyprus Computer Society said the standout result was achieved by secondary school student Mariza Paspalli.
Gold medal and overall ranking
According to the Cyprus Computer Society, Paspalli won gold and ranked third overall among 248 participants. The society said competitors were selected as top national representatives from across Europe and other regions.
Delegation and support staff
The Cyprus delegation also included Anastasia Evangelou, Rafaella Nicolaou and Chrystallena Karittevli, whom the society said delivered strong performances. The team was accompanied by informatics teacher Father Antonis Georgiou as team leader and Afroditi Hadjimarkou as deputy team leader.
Broader significance and upcoming events
The Cyprus Computer Society said the achievement reinforces efforts to increase girls’ participation in Informatics and wider STEM fields. It also said it underlines Cyprus’ consistent presence and competitiveness in international informatics olympiads.
The society added that, following the hosting of the Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (jBOI 2025), Cyprus is continuing its investment in young talent through participation in upcoming events in 2026, including the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), the Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (BOI), the Junior European Olympiad in Informatics (EJOI) and the junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics (jBOI).
