More than 7000 mines, which are spread around the area of 2 million sq.km, still remain in Cyprus.
According to the UN peacekeeping troops, the majority of the mines were made in the US or in China. In total, there are 5 types which are aimed at destroying personnel and armored vehicles.
In 2004, the UN defused more than 27,000 mines and the UN’s expenses exceeded 14 Million Euros.
Since the 1964, there are 6 fatal accidents and 6 recorded injuries caused by the land mines. The last explosion happened on 28th of September 2015- luckily, no one was injured.
