Nicosia, Cyprus. Disy on Tuesday renewed its call for a full investigation into allegations of abuse of power against former party leader and president Nicos Anastasiades following his oral defence before the anti-corruption authority. Akel, meanwhile, called for a purge of Cyprus’ political elite.
Disy reiterates call for investigation
Disy said it had from the beginning maintained an unwavering position in favour of a full investigation into the possible offences detailed in the anti-corruption authority’s findings.
The party said there should be no cover-up for anyone and that it had never separated its own from others.
It called on the government to proceed without further delay with the appointment of independent criminal investigators and to ensure they are given a clear timetable for a quick and substantive investigation.
Disy also said it respects the findings, the institutions, the principles of justice and the rule of law, as well as every person’s right to defend themselves.
Akel criticises Anastasiades’ defence
Akel said Anastasiades spent almost an hour trying to convince everyone that everyone is lying except him.
The party said that, according to Anastasiades, the anti-corruption authority, international journalistic networks, the international press, and those who suggested that institutional entanglement and institutional corruption expanded during his time are all lying.
Akel added that, according to Anastasiades, everything is a lie, including his trips and transactions with a Saudi tycoon and the involvement of his law firm in the golden passport scandal.
It also questioned who, apart from the Disy leadership and his successor Nikos Christodoulides, is left to believe him.
Akel demands resignations
Akel said it demands a purge and called for an impartial and unbiased investigation into all of the anti-corruption authority’s findings and for all suspects to be brought to justice.
It said this requires the immediate resignation of George Savvides and Savvas Angelides from their positions as attorney-general and deputy.
