Nicosia, Cyprus. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus’ trade unions have suspended planned strike action until September 2026, citing difficult conditions in the country’s electricity system. The decision follows rolling power cuts imposed across parts of the island after electricity demand exceeded available generation.
Union statement
Epopai, Sidikek, Sepaik and Syvaik said in a joint statement on Thursday that recent developments had confirmed their long-standing warnings about the condition of the electricity sector.
The unions expressed concern over the inconvenience caused to consumers by recent outages, saying the cuts had become necessary because of state failures and what they described as the inability of independent institutions to ensure sufficient electricity supply.
They said EAC employees were making efforts to repair damage at power plants and within distribution and transmission networks.
Government meeting
The unions criticised the government for not presenting solutions to the country’s energy challenges. They said a meeting on Wednesday with Energy Minister George Papanastasiou and Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki had not produced new proposals.
Describing the situation as continuing energy insecurity, the unions called for immediate government action.
“Taking into account the difficult conditions prevailing in the country’s electricity system, the industrial measures announced are suspended until September 2026,” they said.
Power cuts
The government imposed rolling power cuts across parts of Cyprus on Wednesday after demand outstripped available electricity generation during one of the hottest days of the year.
