Soylent Green
Released in 1973, Soylent Green is set in 2022, in a dystopian world affected by pollution, environmental disaster, depleted natural resources and population growth.
Charlton Heston plays a detective investigating the murder of the head of the Soylent Corporation. The corporation produces Soylent Green, a processed wafer presented as being made from plankton and described as the only sustainable food source available to much of the population.
The detective discovers that Soylent Green is made from human bodies. The film presents the practice as a measure supported by the wealthy to avoid sharing limited resources while maintaining the workforce. In the final scene, Heston’s wounded character declares: “Soylent Green is people!”
Jacob’s Ladder
In the 1990 horror and psychological thriller Jacob’s Ladder, Tim Robbins plays Jacob, a soldier shown in combat in Vietnam before awakening on a train in New York.
As he attempts to understand fragmented memories and disturbing visions, Jacob encounters unexplained phenomena and figures. The film reveals that Jacob and his unit had been subjected to experimentation, while his experiences are portrayed as his mind resisting death.
The final scene shows that Jacob did not return to New York and died during combat in Vietnam.
Primal Fear
Primal Fear, released in 1996, stars Richard Gere as defence lawyer Martin Vail, who represents Aaron Stampler, a reserved altar boy accused of murdering a prominent archbishop.
During the trial, Vail learns that Aaron has dissociative identity disorder. When threatened, another personality, Roy, emerges and is portrayed as calculating and violent.
