Four British women remanded after 125kg tobacco seizure at Paphos airport

Paphos, Cyprus. Customs officers seized more than 125kg of tobacco from four British women at Paphos airport before their scheduled flight to Manchester, the customs department said on Tuesday. The women were remanded in custody for four days.

Airport inspection

The passengers were stopped on Monday after customs officers identified their luggage during checks.

A total of 2,507 packets of tobacco intended for hand-rolled cigarettes were found, with a combined weight of 125.35kg.

Arrests and court remand

The tobacco did not carry health warnings in Greek and Turkish, security features or traceability codes, indicating that duty had not been paid.

Customs officers seized the tobacco and arrested the four women. They appeared before Paphos district court on Tuesday, which ordered their remand in custody for four days.
