Government presents expanded security plan for Vasiliko energy centre

Vasiliko, Cyprus. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris presented plans on Tuesday to further strengthen security at the Vasiliko energy centre, focusing on prevention, operational readiness and effective coordination among involved bodies.

The government considers the security of the energy centre and surrounding area a priority because of the strategic importance of the infrastructure located there.

Joint coordination centre

The central element of the plan is the creation of a joint coordination centre to provide a unified operational picture and enable direct cooperation and coordination between services operating in the area.

Fitiris outlined measures already in force and additional measures under consideration to enhance security on land, at sea and in the air.

Protection of infrastructure

The plan is intended to protect human life, the environment and critical infrastructure and installations, while ensuring the uninterrupted operation of the Vasiliko energy centre.

The Justice Ministry said the concentration of energy, port and communications infrastructure in the area required a comprehensive security framework based on risk prevention, continuous operational readiness and timely, effective responses to incidents.

Meeting participants

The meeting was attended by the justice and defence ministers, the deputy chief of police, the National Guard chief of staff, and representatives of ministries, deputy ministries, the fire brigade, the army, state services and companies headquartered or operating in the Vasiliko area.

Participants reaffirmed the need for close and continuous cooperation between state services and companies in the area, based on a joint plan and clearly defined responsibilities.
