Interior ministry reviews objections to candidacies ahead of May 24 parliamentary elections

Nicosia, Cyprus. The interior ministry is examining numerous objections to candidacies ahead of the May 24 parliamentary elections, chief returning officer Elikkos Elia said on Wednesday.

Objections under review

Elia spoke after candidates for representatives of the three religious groups—Latins, Maronites and Armenians—submitted their candidacies. He said elections were never easy, but added that these would not be the most difficult.

Elia said many objections had been filed over the past couple of days and that the interior ministry was examining them in cooperation with the Law Office to determine whether the candidates met the requirements.

Filing deadline

Elia said objections can be submitted up to 24 hours after candidacies are submitted.

What do you expect the interior ministry’s review process to focus on in assessing whether candidates meet the requirements?
