Iran says it has “no trust” in U.S., sets conditions for Hormuz transit as talks remain suspended

New Delhi, India. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran has “no trust” in the United States and would only negotiate with Washington if it is serious, as talks on ending the war remained on hold.

Hormuz transit conditions

Araqchi said all vessels can pass through the Strait of Hormuz except those at war with Tehran. He said vessels seeking to transit should coordinate with Iran’s navy and described the situation around the strait as “very complicated.”

Iran effectively shut the strait to most shipping traffic after its war with the U.S. and Israel erupted in February. The strait earlier handled about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply.

Ceasefire and stalled negotiations

Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire last month but have struggled to reach a permanent peace pact. Talks mediated by Pakistan have been suspended since Iran and the U.S. each rejected the other’s most recent proposals last week.

Araqchi cited “contradictory messages” as making Iran reluctant about the real intention of the Americans on negotiations. He said Pakistan’s mediation has not failed but is in “difficulty.”

Iran’s stance on diplomacy and conflict

Araqchi said Iran is trying to maintain the ceasefire to give diplomacy a chance but is also prepared to return to fighting.

He said issues holding up negotiations include Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump comments and international pressure

Araqchi’s remarks came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said his patience with Iran was running out and said he agreed in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping that Tehran must reopen the strait.

How do you think the suspension of talks will affect shipping through the Strait of Hormuz?
