Nicosia, Cyprus. The justice ministry said late on Sunday that no evidence had emerged to substantiate claims of sexual violence against a 21-year-old inmate at the central prison in Nicosia.
The allegation activated the relevant protocols and procedures, the ministry said.
Medical examination
A medical examiner was called to examine the inmate, but her report did not indicate sexual abuse, according to the justice ministry.
The inmate said he wished to discuss the matter with his lawyer before submitting a formal complaint.
Protection measures
The ministry said all measures had been taken to protect the inmate, particularly as a possible victim.
It said the prison administration had followed prescribed procedures, immediately informed the authorities and taken all necessary actions, prioritising the prisoner’s protection and a full investigation of the report.
