Keravnos meets ESMA chair Ross ahead of Cyprus EU Council presidency priorities

Nicosia, Cyprus. Finance Minister Makis Keravnos met European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) chair Verena Ross on Thursday to discuss the upcoming Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU. The two exchanged views on priorities to strengthen financial stability within the European Union, the Finance Ministry said.


Priorities for EU financial stability and market integration

According to the Finance Ministry, the meeting focused on promoting policies aimed at strengthening financial stability within the European Union. The discussions also covered ongoing efforts toward the integration of financial markets and the oversight of those markets.

Remarks on ESMA leadership and evolving challenges

Keravnos praised Ross’ efforts and leadership in a rapidly evolving economic environment. He said her work “strengthens the stability, integrity, and reliability shown by European markets during an era defined by complexity, digitisation, and geopolitical challenges”.

Cypriot presidency and ESMA legislative file

Keravnos said the Cypriot presidency will handle the legislative file on an enhanced and more effective role for ESMA with due attention. He added that this approach will be guided by proportionality, risk-based supervision, and meaningful supervisory convergence.

CySEC anniversary events

Keravnos also thanked Ross for attending events marking the 30th anniversary of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC).
