Larnaca, Cyprus. Authorities on Thursday continued operations against illegal caravans and makeshift structures along Larnaca’s coastline, removing three caravans and dismantling around nine structures near the former oil refinery site.
Latest operation
Crews from the Larnaca district government and municipality worked at a beach near the former oil refinery, where the caravans, shacks and other makeshift structures had been erected.
Authorities said the structures occupied public space, altered the natural environment and restricted public access to the coastline.
Previous beach clearance
The operation followed Tuesday’s large-scale enforcement action at the beach next to the Larnaca Nautical Club. The action was launched after caravan owners did not comply with an ultimatum issued by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou and the Larnaca district government.
Authorities recorded 18 caravans at the site last Saturday. Following the warning, about 12 owners removed their caravans voluntarily.
District government crews removed the remaining six caravans on Tuesday using specialised transport platforms.
Fines and inspections
Authorities said caravan owners would receive administrative fines, which must be paid before they can reclaim their vehicles.
Measures have also been introduced to prevent renewed illegal occupation of the beaches. Competent authorities said inspections would continue to protect public land and safeguard access to the coastline.
