Lightning-caused forest fires in Karvounas and Evrychou brought under control, forestry department says

Nicosia, Cyprus. The forestry department said two forest fires caused by lightning strikes were brought under full control on Friday shortly after breaking out.


Fire in Karvounas

The department said the first fire erupted at around 10.25am in the Karvounas area. It was spotted by a passing citizen, and 13 forestry department personnel with two fire engines were deployed to tackle the blaze. The fire was contained by 10.40am before it could spread.

Fire in “Lachani” area of Evrychou

A second fire broke out at around 10.50am in the “Lachani” area of Evrychou and was brought under control within ten minutes without spreading. The incident was detected by a forestry department tractor operator carrying out forestry work in the area, and five forestry department personnel and one fire engine responded.

Cause and response

Authorities said both fires were caused by lightning strikes and highlighted the importance of rapid response in preventing their spread.
